Sneakers scrambled to gain a foothold in the turf while knuckles whitened during a tug of war Monday in front of the Vancouver Art Gallery.
The event was to raise money and mirror the struggles faced by many of Vancouver's inner city youth, according to Contributing to the Lives of Inner City Kids president Catherine Atyeo.
The event marked the beginning of Inner City Kids Week, and featured Vancouver Police Department school liaison officers pulling alongside 100 students from six schools. The Vancouver Courier was one of the sponsors of the event.
Atyeo said providing something fun and stimulating for inner city kids during the summer is particularly important.
"A lot of kids are at risk of just sitting in front of the TV or a video game all summer," she said.
Atyeo said less than 10 per cent of money raised by CLICK goes to administrative costs, leaving the bulk for charitable programs.
"A lot of kids in the inner city go to school hungry,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," she said. "Any teacher will tell you that kids can't learn if they're hungry."
Atyeo said the literacy programs CLICK funds are also important,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], given the high number of inner city kids for whom English is a second language.
VPD Const. Jill Proctor,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who was gripping the rope with Strathcona elementary school students, noted many kids have parents with drug or alcohol addictions and deal with learning disabilities.
She added inner city children face a stigma about their community,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"They're reluctant to say where they're from," she said.
Annie Ehman, board member of CLICK, said Vancouverites must understand the extent of the challenges kids in poorer neighbourhoods face.
"People know the kids are poor, but they don't understand poverty," she said.
Ehman said children with learning disabilities in inner city schools are often not getting the help they need,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"I've seen services cut in schools like mad," she said.
Ehman has worked with several different organizations over the past 15 years to help Vancouver's inner city children. "My perception is that it's definitely not getting better,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," she said.
Frankie Joseph,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 15, a resident of the Hastings-Sunrise neighbourhood,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said without Streetfront,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], an academic and athletic program that receives funding from CLICK,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he would probably not be attending school.
"I think I'd be going down the drain," he said.
Joseph said he has completed four marathons since participating in Streetfront at Britannia secondary school.
While students and police officers jockeyed for dominance on either end of a rope, Japanese taiko drums provided a rhythm for the day's festivities.
Leading a rhythm section composed of 12 and 13-year-old drummers, Admiral Seymour elementary teacher Doug Masuhara said the drum program benefited from contributions from CLICK.
He said the taiko drummers received an annual contribution of between $500 and $600 from CLICK over the last few years, and the money helped them go from playing on garbage cans to being a tightly arranged drum circle.
