Stressed out
I used to equate outlet centres with the sales -- a place where people lose all sense, driven by bargain mania to buy stuff they don't need. But in the last year I have visited several outlet centres around Ireland and Europe and now I see them differently. For one thing, people behave differently at them -- they don't panic buy. The staff treat you like you are a human being -- and not a mean, penny-pinching, bargain hunter.
Thirdly, outlets offer a means of ensuring that clothes that were produced get a second chance to be sold and not wastefully destroyed. Fashion being what it is these days,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with every era now "in", a look can come around again within two years of itself, rather than in 20, as it used to be in the past.
An outlet centre is essentially a place where surplus stock is sold off, generally at about 30 to 50, but sometimes 70, per cent of the original price. Some centres specialise in single-brand stores -- such as a stand-alone Ralph Lauren, Le Creuset or Regine, as in Kildare Village or others can be big stores that may have over-bought in a season and are trying to recuperate some of their losses.
But The OUTLET at Bridgewater Park on the outskirts of Banbridge, 13 miles north of Newry,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is even more interesting, as it is a mix of both concepts -- and it has some boutiques of its own that carry stock you will not find anywhere else in Ireland, or even the UK, I'll wager.
The OUTLET has stores such as The Gap, Marks Spencer and Oasis and it has non chain stores such London favourites, Joseph and Ghost, Daniel Footwear, a well-known mixed designer shoe store in Liverpool and The Designer Studio, a truly fabulous store for all you (male and female) serious, heavyweight international label lovers.
For the consumer based in southern Ireland, it is the opportunity to buy labels such as Stella McCartney, Luella or Jeff Banks, which are not readily or abundantly available here, as well as pieces from collections that may never have been bought by our designer stores and boutiques.
Yes, the prices are in sterling, though all the shops are only too glad of your business and are willing to convert prices into euro. Some bargains such as the Ghost dress (pictured above) reduced from £250 to £25 (331 to 33!) are so cheap, exchange rate differences don't enter into it, the bargain is just too good. But there are other areas,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], such as the outdoor wear stores of which there are a number in The OUTLET, where knowing the value of what you are buying in advance of going there, is advisable.
In general, The OUTLET aims to have discounts of 50-70 per cent. However,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I found the discounts on activewear clothing less significant, probably due to the fact that they are "regular" stock. At the moment,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they've loads of ski gear. The OUTLET is aimed at the clothes shopper,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], although unusually for an outlet centre it has a toy shop with branded goods, as well as stationery shops and jewellery and accessory stores. Playtex, which offers a full-fitting service at The OUTLET, lists it as one of the busiest stores in their network. There is a Sanderson store which stocks their fabrics and bedding, plus some Designers Guild bedding. Royal Doulton is there too. It has a great Samsonite luggage shop. Did you know Antler do a case that weighs just 1.9kg? An ideal gift for the regular Ryanair flyer!
The Marks Spencer is a mixed bag of stock, and to honest, I didn't spend much time in there as there was too much else of interest.
The OUTLET can be especially good for stylish men who are willing to shop around. I got great clothes for my oh-so-picky brat boy in The Gap, styles that never came to its Dublin branch, nor did I ever see them in London. Denim-lovers will enjoy the Replay (unisex) store,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which stocks loads of sample pieces (garments that are designed but never go into production,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], therefore they are "one-offs") as well as oodles of "regular" styles.
I loved the men's gear by Murphy Nye, a very cool, sporty styling meets Diesel Industry,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], guy's brand. Billabong and Bench Hooche are great for Australian-type urban wear. If your bag is Gucci or Emporio Armani, then The Designer Studio (unisex), or Park Avenue if you love Cerruti is where you will find some rare pieces.
The Jeff Banks store is great for the smart looking younger dresser, to the older guy who wants to look contemporary. If your taste runs to John Smedley-type skinny knits, good denims and sharp but not fussy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], suits, all at medium prices -- Jeff Banks is your store. It also does wedding garb.
If you are shopping for a big event,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], bridesmaid dresses, or alternative bridal,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you must check out the Ghost store, which has a fabulous selection of this London label's trademark elegant and romantic viscose,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], bias-cut gowns and coats and velvet pieces. If you find no joy there, pop into the Joseph store next door which stocks, apart from its own label, other brands such as Stella McCartney and Marni. There is also an LK Bennett store.
I recommend The Designer Studio for its great selection of designer bags, as well as amazing sample clothing pieces -- the stuff you see walking the red carpet in Hollywood and New York. But often you need to be a size 6 to get into this stuff! I also recommend Daniel Footwear, which does cheap and designer shoes and accessories and in which I found some gems at bargain prices.
While The OUTLET is undoubtedly a great stop for designer label and fashion luvvies, there are also some good stores for the older woman such as The Edinburgh Mills, Olsen and Jaeger.
Situated on the A1, The OUTLET is easily accessed. It's the brainchild of John Farmer of the Orana group, who set out to create a high-end, varied retail outlet with a lean towards high fashion.
The long-term plan for Bridgewater Park is that it will be five times its size comprising more stores, a hotel, drive-through restaurants and the like. It's a sign of how exciting Northern Ireland is becoming for business and developers.
At present it's 205,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 sq ft with more than 80 stores,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it is very manageable.
I allowed about three hours to potter. I wish I'd had six. I got the train up and took a 10-minute taxi ride to it but next time I will drive.
There is an excellent restaurant, Simply Deanes, as well as a Costa Coffee, and some fast food places, so it is possible -- and advisable -- to make a day of your visit.相关的主题文章:
