Also, in New York City, Harlem-based Rep. Charlie Rangel is facing his own form of judgment day as he fights to hold on to his seat amid Congressional controversies. (Rangel really likes his perks and he's super lazy about hiding it.) He's not really under threat of losing, but his ego has taken a blow amidst the scandal.
In his attempt to fend off his Democratic primary opponents of them the son of the man Rangel vanquished amid a scandal of his own, former Rep. Adam Clayton Powell Jr. powerful former House Ways and Means chairman has stood at subway station entrances, talked at churches and senior centers, and even rode in the back of a flatbed soundtruck on Sunday through his district.

But, as he has on other days during the taxing campaign, he lapsed into a bit of sadness.

I had a chat over email with a reader about Rangel and other embattled black Congressional members caught up in ethics scandals, primarily involving sweet, rent controlled housing, hooking relatives up with primo jobs, nepotism and other perks of being a member of Congress that most Congress folk are better at hiding from the general public. This is what I wrote to her when she asked me what I thought about the hot mess Rangel and others, like Maxine Waters, have gotten themselves into.
I think it's not surprising given how small the black community is (there literally very few degrees of separation between highly successful black people in this country . Heck, there's not that many degrees between me and a lot of folks and I'm not rich or famous). It would be easy for a black politician who has relied largely on their connections within the community for support, both monetary and political, to get caught in compromising situations.
Of course everyone's husband/wife/brother/cousin has a job with a major funder/backer/donor/blah-blah-blah. All the relationships are so obvious because the circle is so small. With white politicians it's a bit easier, having a larger network to pull from, to hide funds, get people positions indirectly without implicating yourself and whatnot simply because there are just more people, reducing the chances of it looking compromising. Also, most other politicians have been playing this game longer and have been mentored by previous representatives in how to do these things without getting caught. Most black reps didn't start showing up in abundance until after 1984 and '88. Most are still doing what they've always done and are sloppy about things and not discrete.
Plus, for folks like Rangel, this is the best, most lucrative job he's ever had in his life. It's not like he has some cush lobbying job lying around for him the day he's not a rep anymore. He doesn't come from generations of wealth and influence. He didn't have a corporate job. He's no Bloomberg. And there's no retirement plan for old civil rights activists. Soooo . again. Not shocking that he's had his hand in the cookie jar.
The only thing that's a little unfair is that much of Congress has done the same things Rangel and Waters did. But because their pool is so small, their moves were really obvious and hard to ignore. Still,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it hardly seems fair to single them out when everyone is hooking up relatives,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], trying to get cheap housing and land deals and trying to figure out ways to charge trips to either corporations, donors or the taxpayers.
So. Yeah, it's bad but . Congress, heal thyself. There's a whole lot of dirty going on in there.

I have no ills towards Fenty but I think Gray would be a great mayor. And let me say, that my opinion is one of personal preference because I am definitely not a politically savvy man but then again, isn that why so many people vote? Yes Fenty is younger (closer to my age than Gray) but I have always appreciated Mr. Gray swagger if you will; plus Fenty bothers me when he does local interviews-he stutters too much and you can trust a man who stutters Smile
