attends service for 'Popcorn' Knoxville News Sentinel
DANDRIDGE - As promised, country star Hank Williams Jr. flew from Nashville into Morristown today for a memorial service for Marvin "Popcorn" Sutton in Dandridge.
Williams said he did now know Sutton, but he knew the legend.
Sutton, 62,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a cultural icon in Appalachia, was a lifelong maker of illegal whiskey in East Tennessee. He committed suicide in March just before he was to report to federal prison to serve a sentence for distilling and selling moonshine.
Williams did not attend a planned procession in Parrottsville after the Dandridge service that is to include a horse-drawn 100-year-old hearse,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
More details as they develop online and in Sunday's News Sentinel,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Whether we like it or not "Popcorn" was a regional icon, and is becoming in death a bona-fide legend. It is part of the character of the south that we accept certain rascally figures as representative of something in our own selves that we necessarily keep suppressed in the interest of peace and prosperity. Popcorn was undeniably such a figure, and I'm not convinced that's such a bad thing. Do we remember that just a few years ago we piled into the theaters by the millions to lionize Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow despite the fact that they were common cheap thugs who shot to death several innocent people? Popcorn (as far as I know) never killed anyone,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he undoubtedly caused countless headaches and no doubt innumerable scrapes and bruises,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but then so has Jack Daniels and Jose Cuervo. His craft was descended from a tradition dating back to the very first settlers on this land, and indeed is even today not illegal,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], only regulated for the tax revenues it produces (sound familiar!) Consider that within the forseeable future it will probably be a crime to grow tobacco plants, and how many of our families were involved in that! I find our values turning toward the curious if not bizarre in that it is now fashionable to hold up as a cultural ideal for instance a jock who may be paid more for a single game than many of us earned in our working lives, despite the fact that he couldn't express an abstract idea if his two hundred dollar sneakers depended on it. Values change,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that's an historical fact,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and there will probably not be another "Popcorn Sutton", but for better or worse he made his mark and anyone with access to the internet can verify that he is now arguably the most famous person (worldwide) to ever have come out of this neck of the woods. Rest in peace you ol rascal,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you won't soon be forgotten. And although I'm not a fan of his music I offer a neighborly thank you to Mr Hank Williams for his show of goodwill.
